First Wolverine footage shown at SDCC http://wolverine.moviechronicles.com/2008-07/first-wolverine-footage-shown-at-sdcc/ http://wolverine.moviechronicles.com/2008-07/first-wolverine-footage-shown-at-sdcc/#comments Fri, 25 Jul 2008 16:47:58 +0000 FofR http://wolverine.moviechronicles.com/?p=56 The first look at actual X-men Origins Wolverine footage has been shown at the San Diego Comic Con, presented by Wolverine himself, Hugh Jackman, after flying in from Australia, where shooting has just finished.

The footage combines the necessarily arrogant Wolverine amidst cheesy backdrop explosions - this is something that we have come to expect and love about the character, but the trailer also oozes some quality and distinction as new characters Gambit and Deadpool show up, notching up the excitement factor one more level.

/Film have a the best rundown on the events:

The trailer kicks off with Wolverine and Sabertooth in a prison cell. They get taken outside, strapped to posts, and shot to hell by a firing squad. “What did that feel like?” a man asks. Wolverine responds: “It tickled.”

Cut to a shot of Wolverine strutting cheesily to the camera as a truck explodes behind him. Marvel logo fades onscreen.

Then Major William Stryker announces himself to both Sabertooth and Wolverine, discussing the prospect of putting a special team together. Interspersed between this are shots of them running through the woods with full-fledged animal ferocity, being surrounded by a group of soldiers in a circle while amping up to kick some ass, and then the clincher, a shot of Deadpool posing for the camera with his two samurai swords.

Wolverine tells Sabertooth that this wasn’t the program he signed up for. We see him being hooked into place inside the adamantium-injecting machine and thrashing about in the water. He bursts out of it in a blaze of anger and roars at the camera, his claws bursting out of his hands while he does it. Bodies drop as Wolverine slashes in every direction.

A handful of cards are tossed toward the screen, and the camera pans to reveal none other than Gambit holding his electrically-enhanced staff.

More quick shots: a child Wolverine (?) screams with his claws burst out of his hands, Sabertooth lunges across the ground like an animal and attacks Wolverine in what looks like a small snippet of a much larger battle, Wolverine gets clobbered in a boxing ring by the massive Blob, Wolverine goes one-on-one with Gambit, and a mysterious girl begins to have electricity sparkle all throughout her body.

Before you can even begin to recognize all the quick shots of your favorite comic book characters, a final set of clips shows off a very cool-looking set piece with Wolverine facing off on his motorcycle against a truck, and eventually climaxes with him launching thirty feet in the air onto a helicopter.

The title shoots on screen: X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

SHH also have some coverage.

Detailed WWII Set Report http://wolverine.moviechronicles.com/2008-06/detailed-wwii-set-report/ http://wolverine.moviechronicles.com/2008-06/detailed-wwii-set-report/#comments Tue, 17 Jun 2008 18:43:55 +0000 FofR http://wolverine.moviechronicles.com/?p=52 SHH have posted a set report from the Omaha beach scenes, simulating the 1944 D-day landings. This is a great read that shows the true effort and grit (or sand?) that goes into shooting a realistic war scene.

I was a part of the WWII, Omaha Beach scenes. From what I can gather, Logan (aka Wolverine) is pretty much the Eternal Soldier archetype. By this I mean he is by nature a warrior and is drawn to wars and conflict. The D-Day landings at Omaha Beach are iconic in American military history. It makes perfect sense from the character story to have this landing as a setting for some of his history.

About 70 extras were hired on for the shooting of the beach landing scenes (plus stunt guys plus stars). These extras were a mix of normal extras and trained army personnel. I fall into the latter category being a member of the Australian Army Reserve. The casting directors wanted to leaven the bread of actors with some real-life soldiers in order to give the scenes a little bit of added realism. I think it worked well.

WW2 on Blacksmiths Beach http://wolverine.moviechronicles.com/2008-06/pictures-from-blacksmiths-beach/ http://wolverine.moviechronicles.com/2008-06/pictures-from-blacksmiths-beach/#comments Wed, 11 Jun 2008 23:22:06 +0000 FofR http://wolverine.moviechronicles.com/?p=51 Looks like IESB’s report that filming had wrapped was a little premature, just yesterday the X-men Origins production team were simulating war scenes at Blacksmiths Beach. A group of Flickr photographers in the area gathered to take their shots and meet Hugh Jackman. From the pictures it looks like WWII will feature, though it’s unclear how much the movie shall focus on this aspect of Wolverine’s past.

From Wikipedia - Wolverine’s brief history, to fill some people in:

During World War II, Logan teams with Captain America versus HYDRA [Captain America cameo!?], and continues a career as a soldier-of-fortune/adventurer. Logan works for the First Canadian Parachute Battalion and the CIA before being recruited for Team X.

As a member of Team X, Logan is given false memory implants. He continues on the team, until he is able to break free of the mental control and joins the Canadian Defense Ministry. Logan is subsequently kidnapped by Weapon X, where he remains captive and experimented on, until his rescue by the Winter Soldier, after which he returns to the Canadian wilderness.

Wolverine wraps principal photography http://wolverine.moviechronicles.com/2008-06/wolverine-wraps-principal-photography/ http://wolverine.moviechronicles.com/2008-06/wolverine-wraps-principal-photography/#comments Sat, 07 Jun 2008 09:47:14 +0000 FofR http://wolverine.moviechronicles.com/?p=50 The IESB are reporting that principal photography has wrapped in Australia. How long until we see our first teaser trailer?

Marvel’s Kevin Feige told IESB that X-Men Origins: Wolverine has just wrapped principal photography in Australia and that there are only a couple of weeks left for some pick up shots second unit will be taking care of.

Several sources close to the production have described X-Men Origins: Wolverine as a gritty 70’s type of action film.

Scott Summers (Cyclops) to make appearance http://wolverine.moviechronicles.com/2008-05/scott-summers-cyclops-to-make-appearance/ http://wolverine.moviechronicles.com/2008-05/scott-summers-cyclops-to-make-appearance/#comments Wed, 07 May 2008 20:55:22 +0000 FofR http://wolverine.moviechronicles.com/?p=48 An astute SHH reader, Retroman, has spotted that an Australian theatrical agency, Meissner Management, has posted a newly filled role for the latest X-men movie:

TIM POCOCK secures Role of SCOTT SUMMERS in Feature Film “WOLVERINE” US Production Director GAVIN HOOD.

The extent of Summers’ appearance in the movie is not yet known - though given the relatively unknown stature of the actor it may be safe to assume it is only a small role.

Hugh Jackman briefly talks about Origins http://wolverine.moviechronicles.com/2008-04/hugh-jackman-briefly-talks-about-origins/ http://wolverine.moviechronicles.com/2008-04/hugh-jackman-briefly-talks-about-origins/#comments Sun, 27 Apr 2008 22:48:24 +0000 FofR http://wolverine.moviechronicles.com/?p=47 Hugh Jackman has recently been speaking with the Herald Sun, in doing so be quickly brought up some details about X-men Origins:

“I’m used to these movies now,” he says. “They’re big and there’s a lot involved, a lot at stake, so it’s always high pressure. But Gavin Hood, our director, is a real force. He’s an Oscar-winning director (for Tsotsi) and he’s used to working under different kinds of pressure and stresses.”

Jackman hand-picked Melbourne youngster Kodi Smit-McPhee (Romulus, My Father) to play Wolverine as a young man.

“He’s one of those kids who’s fearless,” Jackman says. “I hope he doesn’t read this article because yes, there is pressure on him because of who he’s playing and the expectations of fans. I was lucky to be completely ignorant of fans’ expectations and the whole world before X-Men came out. I just hope he doesn’t read too much or go on the internet because he naturally has the goods I know the fans will love.”

The second paragraph suggests that we may be seeing a lot more of young Wolverine than first expected.
